SPECIALTY LAB TESTS

Where Science Meets The Art of Healing

FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE APPROACH

As Naturopathic Doctors, we seek to heal others through:

  • Treating root cause or causes vs. treating symptoms.

  • Assessing when the body is starting to go into dysfunction vs. when the body is already in a diseased state.

  • Preventative vs Reactive

  • Individualized Care vs Standardized Care

  • Comprehensive Functional lab testing vs Basic Lab Testing

We dive deeper diagnostically, to find out why.

FUNCTIONAL LAB TESTS

Certified in Functional Medicine

MICRONUTRIENT PANEL

Vitamin, mineral, and antioxidant deficiencies have been shown to suppress the functions of the immune system leaving us with low energy and more susceptible to chronic diseases like arthritis, cancer, diabetes, obesity, infertility, heart disease, osteoporosis, etc.
This functional lab is a comprehensive nutritional analysis of the body's intracellular function. It measures 35 selected vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and other essential micronutrients. This analysis can reveal your functional nutritional status over a much longer period of time than conventional serum testing, thus, providing you with a more meaningful measurement than all other nutritional testing.

FOOD SENSITIVITY PANEL

Food Sensitivities can cause a variety of chronic symptoms which you would never think could be linked to foods. The following health problems and others may be alleviated when you identify, eliminate reactive foods, and health your gut: Weight gain, headaches, joint pain, skin rashes, acne, sinus problems, indigestion, depression, achy muscles, fatigue, fluid retention, gas, bloating, brain fog and more.

This functional lab determines which foods you are sensitive to with an immuno bloodprint. Your blood print is as individual as your fingerprint.

Though many people suffer from food allergies that present with immediate symptoms, an increasing number of individuals suffer from food sensitivity – a delayed reaction to certain foods that can occur hours to days after consumption. This adverse reaction to foods can over-activate the immune system creating inflammation in the body and a variety of symptoms, e.g., headaches, fatigue, joint pain and arthritis, anxiety/depression, skin rashes, abdominal pain, bloating, and diarrhea.

INTESTINAL PERMEABILITY OR "LEAKY GUT"

Imbalances in Zonulin, histamine, DAO and LPS are associated with intestinal permeability, often referred to as, “leaky gut.”

When the gut barrier is weakened, a person is more vulnerable to food antigens, toxins, and unfriendly microbes. A leaky gut tears down the body’s defenses and opens up the system to increased inflammation.

There are many possible causes of damage to the GI lining and subsequent leaky gut.

Common causes of intestinal permeability (leaky gut) are bacterial overgrowth, food sensitivities including gluten sensitivity, NSAIDs, and alcohol consumption.

Reducing inflammation and healing the GI lining can help restore the GI barrier and normalize Zonulin, DAO, histamine, and LPS.

This intestinal barrier (leaky gut) tests for zonulin levels, DAO, Histamine, and LPS.

ORGANIC ACID TEST (OAT)

Abnormally high levels of intestinal yeast and bacteria can results in behavior disorders, hyperactivity, movement discorders, fatigue, SIBO, digestive disorders including constipation/ diarrhea and poor immune function.
Many people with chronic illnesses and neurological disorders often excrete several abnormal organic acids in their urine.  The OAT is a urine test that provides a comprehensive metabolic snapshot of a patient's overall health with over 70 markers.

DIGESTIVE ANALYSIS

The Comprehensive Digestive Analysis is designed to test the ecology and physiology of the gut. The gut is central to health and nutrition because without adequate digestion nothing gets into the system as it should. Gut health is inherent to optimal wellness. While we obviously think about the connection between overall health and specific conditions related to the gut, such as irritable bowel syndrome, colitis and Crohn’s, every health condition is impacted by the gut.

In addition to testing gut bugs, this stool culture shows you markers for inflammation in the gut to gauge improvement of care. Markers that show how well one is absorbing are also illustrated. A number of short chain fatty acids are shown which are indicators for how strong the gut wall is. All fundamental building blocks for gut health are included in this profile.

The Complete Stool culture includes all gut bugs, measures of gut lining to assess gut permeability, as well as measures of absorption and digestive enzymes. However, each major grouping of the stool culture can be done individually as well for more specific patient needs and follow-up care.

COMPREHENSIVE HORMONE PANEL

Skin, A Naturopathic Clinic offers comprehensive male and female hormone panels that reveal the overall state of hormonal balance in a patient.  Like nutrients, hormones influence all aspects of health and disease - mood, sleep, metabolism, immunity, heart health and appearance.  An imbalance of one hormone can initiate cascade of events that alters other hormones, so a comprehensive look at hormone status is key.

Clinical Applications of Hormone Imbalance:

  • Fatigue & energy levels

  • Cardiovascular health (blood pressure, clotting, lipids)

  • Neurology (migraines, sleep, pain)

  • Mental health (depression, anxiety, cognitive function)

  • Immunity (infections, autoimmune disease)

  • Metabolism (blood sugar regulation, tissue repair)

  • Bone density (osteoporosis)

  • Physical appearance (skin, muscles, hair)

COMPREHENSIVE THYROID PANEL

The Complete Thyroid Panel measures thyroid gland activity, peripheral conversion of thyroid hormone, and thyroid autoantibodies. The thyroid is a gland which is responsible for energy and metabolism of the entire body system. It produces and regulates hormones – which are important for growth and development, mood, and sexual function. Thyroid hormones impact cognitive function, mood, emotions, concentration, memory, and attention. Thyroid dysfunction is one of the most under-addressed conditions in medicine today. When the thyroid is low people feel fatigued, lack motivation, have difficulty losing weight, difficulty with concentration, feel depressed, and tend to have more trouble with digestion. If the thyroid is off the entire system feels run down. Better thyroid function helps our immune system, our energy, as well as reproductive function. There are thyroid receptors on every tissue in our body, demonstrating its necessity for all systems. When the thyroid is corrected it is like a light switch coming on the system. We feel restored and more like ourselves. Thyroid imbalances can result in a wide array of symptoms, affecting nearly every system in the body because thyroid hormones are involved in:

  • Carbohydrate, protein and fat metabolism

  • Mitochondrial function

  • Digestion

  • Circulation

  • Muscle and nerve function

  • Oxygen use in the body

  • Hormone secretion

  • Sexual and reproductive health

  • Vitamin utilization

CORTISOL PANEL

Cortisol imbalances can cause a variety of chronic issues. The following health concerns and others may be alleviated when you identify your cortisol levels throughout the day and address the imbalances: Stress, afternoon fatigue, insomnia, difficulty sleeping, difficulty waking up after sleep, weight gain, and more.

This functional lab determines cortisol imbalances throughout the day to clinically assess your adrenal function.

The adrenal glands, that sit atop the kidneys, are vital to our ability to effectively handle stress, by producing two hormones, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and cortisol.

These hormones together regulate many systems in the body: Imbalances in cortisol and DHEA directly affect mood, sleep, immune function, thyroid function, weight, and resistance to stress, and may contribute to the development of various chronic health conditions:

  • Anxiety & depression

  • Chronic fatigue

  • Fibromyalgia

  • Osteoporosis (bone loss)

  • Rheumatoid arthritis

  • Abdominal weight gain

  • Digestive disorders

  • Diabetes and heart disease

COMPLETE CARDIO PROFILE

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death for both men and women, accounting for every 1 in 4 deaths. Certain health conditions, such as diabetes and overweight, and certain lifestyle choices, such as a poor diet, physical inactivity, smoking, and drinking too much alcohol, increase the risk.
The Complete Cardio Profile with Oxidized LDL offers doctors and patients a complete picture of a person’s CVD risk compared with a standard lipid profile. This Profile measures standard cardiovascular disease markers: total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL), and triglycerides. In addition, the Complete Cardio Profile measures oxidized LDL, markers of inflammation, obesity, and metabolic syndrome.

COMPLETE METABOLIC SCREENING

To determine your general health status; to screen for, diagnose, or monitor any one of a variety of diseases and conditions that affect blood cells, such as anemia, infection, inflammation, bleeding disorder, cancer, current status of your metabolism, including the health of your kidneys and liver as well as electrolyte and acid/base balanceand levels of blood glucose and blood proteins; to monitor known conditions, such as hypertension, and to monitor the use of medications to check for any kidney- or liver-related side effects

ENVIRONMENTAL ALLERGY PANEL

Allergic responses, immune imbalances, and antigen reactions can cause a variety of chronic issues. These responses may be from one or a combination of pet dander, dust mites, pollen, grass, and many other environmental allergens. The following health concerns and others may be alleviated when you identify your specific immune response and de-sensitize that response over time: Seasonal allergies, frequent sneezing, itchy and water eyes, hives, runny nose, sinus congestion, and more.
This functional lab determines your specific environmental allergens which helps to determine your individualized sublingual immunotherapy to reduce and/or eliminate your allergy symptoms overtime.

MTHFR MUTATION

MTHFR is an enzyme responsible for converting 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate to the product 5-methyltetrahydrofolate - it is involved in the metabolism of folate and homocysteine. The product of the reaction catalyzed by MTHFR converts homocysteine (a potentially toxic amino acid) to methionine (a useful and necessary amino acid).

Why is MTHFR Genotyping Important?

  • Certain mutations in the gene coding for MTHFR produce an enzyme that has reduced activity.

  • Reduced activity can lead to elevated levels of homocysteine (a.k.a. hyperhomocysteinemia), especially when folate levels are low.

  • High homocysteine (>13umol/L) may double the risk of developing illness or complications.

  • MTHFR genotyping can provide information about potential causes of elevated homocysteine and approaches for addressing it.

  • Based on MTHFR and homocysteine results, physicians can develop dietary and medical recommendations - increased intake of folate alone or in combination with vitamins B6 and B12 are recommended.

  • Based on results, recommendations for methotrexate dosage can be adjusted.

Risks Associated with MTHFR Variants/High Homocysteine:

  • Cardiovascular Disease

  • Cerebral Vascular Disease (Stroke)

  • Venous and Arterial Thrombosis

  • Methotrexate Toxicity for Cancer Therapy

Who Should be Tested?

  • Those with high homocysteine levels.

  • Those who have a familial history of cardiovascular disease, stroke or thrombosis.

  • Those who are candidates for long-term methotrexate therapy.
